The Harmony of the Gospels

What is the harmony of the gospels?

The Harmony of the Gospels is the harmony of the Four Gospels as reported by Matthew, Mark, Luke and John in chronological order of events taking place during the life of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Many ask the question, Why four gospels?

If you were to take four pictures of the same room from four different angles, different views of the contents would show up on the photograph. Yet it would be the same room.

If you asked four different people to describe each picture in detail, each person would describe his/her view in variance with the others. All of them would be accurate, but different, according to each their personal points of view.

If you were to ask four different writers to write a story about your life, you wold end up with four different renderings from four different points of view.

In the same way, each gospel is described by each of the four evangelists who reported their personal stories of the life of Jesus.

The Gospel Synoptics

The three gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke are referred to as the synoptic gospels. That is because they are similar. "Synoptic" means seeing a general view as a whole of the same events.

However, the gospel of John stands on its own, coming from a "believer" point-of-view and presents Jesus as God. The narrative and discourses of this gospels are different.

The synoptic gospels present Jesus more from a human side of his life, whereas John from His divine side of the Savior.

The Synoptics differences

Matthew writes from a Jewish point-of-view and presents Jesus as the Jewish Messiah who fulfills the promises and prophecies of the Jewish Scriptures.

Mark, from a Roman point-of-view, presents Jesus as the Conqueror, a man of action who triumphs over Satan and sin.

Luke, from a Greek point-of-view, presents Jesus as the comprehensive, intellectual, Perfect Son of Man.
