A response to the question of whether life begins at conception or not.

When does Life Begin?

by Rev. Dr. D. M. Hoffmann, B.Th., M.Th., Ph.D., Ord./IAOGI, (CNC).

A while back, I heard a well-known and influential speaker, being interviewed on CNN, say that he believes life does not begin at conception... therefore he approves of stem cell research.

A lot of people can't make many right decisons in their lives because they do not research what they believe, to see if they are correct or not -- even Christians. The Word of God says, "My people perish for lack of knowledge". It also says test and search everything.

In the old days, we could make choices between right and wrong more readily because we believed in the absolutes of the Word of God. But in the world we live in today where God's absolutes have been thrown out for the most part, we must increase our knowledge. This is too bad because it is more work for us which adds to our stressful way of living.

It is much easier to believe "thus saith the Lord" then to spend hours of research to "prove" to ourselves what we can trust from the Word of God in the first place. In other words, we could simply trust God and say, this is wrong because God's Word says so, therefore I will not approve of it or I will not do it. But, instead we say, it's not wrong because "I" don't believe it is.

Is this not what Satan said when he fell, "I will ....."?

This is what happened with this man I refer to above. "I" don't believe that life begins at conception, therefore "I" approve of stem cell research.

But God says it's wrong.

You say, "well there is no scripture that says "thou shall not perform stem cell research". No, but there is a scripture that says "thou shall not kill". And that is where the confusion begins: I don't believe that life begins at conception, therefore stem cell research does not involve killing a life.

So they base their choice of right and wrong on what "they believe" and do not bother to research whether they may be wrong when they hear others contradict their type of choice.

When does life being?

Arguing this question raises a lot of emotions because most people will define it from their "beliefs" point of view. But let's look at what science says about it.

"New life is created when egg and sperm unite, and the twenty-three chromosomes carried in the egg are paired with the twenty-three chromosomes brought to it by the sperm. These forty-six chromosomes contain the master plan for your body. (David G. Myers Psychology, Second Edition). It will not turn into anythng else but "you" (or me or any particular individual) -- right from this point.

A new life is created by the union of the reproductive cells when one cell of the egg is paired with one cell of the sperm. Each of these cells have what is called chromosomes. The egg cell has 23 and the sperm cell has 23. Paired, these 46 chromosomes contain the master plan for your individuality.

Each of these chromosomes contain the DNA that contain the genes of an individual.

When these reproductive cells join together, they create life. Within half a day, they fuse together into one cell. This stage of the development has a fifty-fifty chance to survive to the next.

Those cells that survive divide into two cells, then four and up to one hundred within the first week differentiating into each their speciliazed structure and function.

The whole process of germinal, embryonic and fetal development continues to multiply, forming the vital organs and structure. The heart begins to beat, the liver begins to make red blood cells, the stomach begins to function... until the embryo becomes a fully functional and complete human being.
