The Pre-human existence of Jesus, continued, No. 5

Who is Jesus and where did He come from? ... continued,

Bible Study No. 5, August 15, 2010

Why Jesus came to earth…

In the last bible studies, we looked at who Jesus is.

In this study we will look at why Jesus came to earth.

Jesus came in person to bring Salvation to man -- to give life and light to mankind. The life was given to a world that had died in sin at the beginning, shortly after God had made man. We read that story in the first book of the Bible, the book of Genesis.

The light was brought amidst the darkness but that darkness did not comprehend it. But the men and women who did believe on Him received Salvation and the life and the light that God had brought with Him.

His name, Jesus Christ means the Anointed Saviour (Jesus = Saviour and Christ = the Anointed One). He came to save mankind from sin -- that’s what Salvation is about.

(Please note: when “man” is referred to throughout the book, it means “woman” as well. For the purpose of easy reading, he/she, man/woman, etc. was omitted. When the Bible talks about “man” it means “mankind” – male and female).

The Bible tells us that, “all have sinned and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23), and that “the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23)…

But it also tells us that we are made alive in Christ,

“… see yourself also to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 6:11)

“But the scripture has concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.” (Galatians 3:22)

We receive Salvation through belief or faith. The word in the original Greek text is the same for belief and faith.

The whole purpose of the Bible is to tell us how God loved the world so much that He gave His only Son that we might have eternal life.

John 3:16 -“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever (you can put your name here__________________) believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

That life even begins now right here on earth, the moment we believe. The world gets saved one person at a time.

The whole story from the beginning

The Old Testament tells us about God before Jesus came to earth. The Old Testament is still relevant today because, first of all, the Word of God is the same yesterday, today and forever.

In the Old Testament we learn about God the Father who is totally Holy and Righteous. Since man fell into sin, he could never live a holy life before a Holy God. Man is conscious of that and is therefore constantly looking for ways (religions) to come to God. Sin disconnected man from God. To be disconnected means to be discontented. We’re not sinners because we sin, we sin because we are sinners.

Secondly, in the Old Testament we learn about the laws of God and of man. Some of the laws of man pertain to old traditions, often not sanctioned by God, but most of the laws shown in the Old Testament are from God for practical living.

Because man could not live righteously before God, God had a plan to redeem mankind -- that is to bring sinful man back into relationship with God or to reconnect man to God. That plan was for Him to come to earth and take the punishment for sin upon Himself in the place of man.

Because the wages of sin is death, God had to give Himself to death, in His fleshly nature, for each one of us -- in our place. By coming down to earth, Jesus became the righteousness through whom we are made righteous - each one of us, one individual at a time.

Righteousness is not something you do. Righteousness is something you put on. You have to put on the Righteousness of Christ given to you by Christ -- God Himself.

We will pick up from here in our next Bible Study

May the Lord Bless you.

Let us pray for each person here today....
